Black is a Rainbow Color is Angela’s first book, but what an impact it’s made! It’s earned starred reviews in Kirkus, Booklist,
and Horn Book, and has been included in 10+ best books lists, including an NCTE 2021 Notable Poetry Book, a 2020 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award Finalist, and a New York Public Library Best Book of 2020. Before becoming a writer, Angela was a globe-trotting singer. A Minneapolis native, she now lives in Southern California as writer, wife, and mom. Recently, the Booking Biz caught up with Angela to ask her a few questions about her many roles…
Booking Biz:What does your average day look like?
Angela: My average day begins with what I call the morning hustle: getting the family fed and out the door for work and school. The rest of my day is typically filled with reading, writing, gardening, emailing, and snuggling with my Siamese kitten Koh-Koh-Mishu. The amount of time spent on each task varies, but if I can fit everything in before the afternoon hustle, I consider it a productive day. Booking Biz: When you’re not writing, what do you like to do best?
Angela: When not writing, I love singing and listening to music. Music was my first love. Music initiated my fascination with words: the rhythm, the rhyme, the turn of phrase. I inhale music and carry it with me wherever I go. Booking Biz: Where do you get the inspiration for your books?
Angela: Inspiration is everywhere: conversations with family and friends, documentaries, podcasts, the view from any window. . .there is no shortage of inspiration. The challenge is finding the right words, the right voice, and the right spirit for the story itself. Booking Biz: Did you always want to write books for children, or was there another career you wished for as a child?
Angela: As a young person, all I wanted to do was sing. With a great deal of luck and wonderful friendships, my first career was in music. I traveled the world as a background vocalist singing in nightclubs, theaters, and arenas. Writing, in fact, is my second career—the career that allows me to be fully creative while remaining home with my family—working that morning hustle! Booking Biz: If you ruled the world, what would it look like?
Angela: For starters, if I ruled the world, every school would be well-stocked with well-paid educators. Class sizes would be small. Tutoring and enrichment opportunities would be abundant. Income/SES would have no bearing on the quality of education a child receives. In other words, the education playing field would be leveled. Also, every community would have its own farmers market and independently owned bookstore.
